The government is now offering incentives to households and businesses that are willing and able to go green. When you install a solar system, you can earn rebates from the state government, the federal government, and even from your energy company. These rebates often change, so stay tuned for updates or new incentives as they become available.

State Tax Breaks

Receive a Renewable Energy Tax Exemption for PV, PV thermal and other solar energy systems. This exemption allows you to remove the value of  the solar panels from your property taxes. You can file for this exemption with your county auditor.

Residential Incentives: $.60/W (up to 25kW).

Commercial, Schools, Non-Profit: $.40/W up to 50kW followed by $.30/W (up to 200kW)

The State of New York also offers a Residential Tax Credit of 25% up to $5,000 & Commercial Depreciation Tax Credit of 40% for all Solar Systems.

Federal Tax Breaks

Here are some of the big ways to save on your taxes when you install a solar system:

Business Energy Investment Tax Credit & Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit: You will be credited back 30% of the cost of your system. If you have installed a large system, don't worry. There is no maximum amount for this rebate. Even hybrid systems are eligible. These rebates will be available until the end of 2016.

Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs): When you register your solar system with the State of New York, one SREC will be awarded for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours of energy your system produces. If you are searching for a SREC trader to use, contact us. We are happy to help however we can.

Energy-Efficient Mortgages (EEMs): Homeowners can take advantage of EEMs to finance green improvements made to their home or property.

The State of New York is helping families and businesses save with grants and other funding opportunities. Check out this list of grants currently available in New York.

Sell Energy Back To The Grid

Earning credits or selling energy back to the grid is called net metering. When you install a solar system, you will receive credits on your energy bill for the power that your system produces. This means that if you have excess energy, you can sell your power back to the grid. If your system covers your usage completely, you won't have an energy bill at all. Be sure to contact your energy company to see if they offer net metering or other credits for going green.
